About Downstairs RecordsDownstairs Records opened in February of 1970. It was originally located in the subway arcade on the corner of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. (Which is where the name comes from.) You had to walk down a flight of stairs to enter the store. It was in the same location as a famous store called "Times Square Records." We opened the store one year after their closing. It is a family owned store in business now for over 29 years.We have gotten many awards over the years, like best dance music store of the decade and we have received many gold records for helping to promote new artists like Chic, Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band, Billy Joel, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Ritchie, and the Temptations. We supply many broadway plays with music. We helped on the movie soundtrack for "Bronx Tale". Many personalities come into the store looking for that hard to get song, or that perfect song to go with a special scene. Our customer base includes Bruce Willis, Matt Dillon, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Chris Rock, Rachel Welch, Isaac Hayes, Dennis Miller (from HBO) and many more!
